Last week, I gave some first thoughts on the Pokemon TCG Online iPad app. Now, after testing the various game modes, we're ready to give our full review of the game:
Some of this review might be an extension of my thoughts on the Pokemon Card Game in general, as opposed to just the online iPad version. That said, as card games go, this one ranks way up there. It's simple enough that a beginner can grasp it in short order, but not so simple that you feel like you're playing Crazy Eights with your kid brother. As I said in my First Thoughts post last week, I think the game could do a slightly better job of catering to newcomers (i.e. Android games on pc online. explaining weaknesses), but it wasn't so difficult to figure out that I was lost. The game runs smoothly (when it isn't crashing), and each match doesn't take up too much time. Some card games take forever because you can't move past the animations (I'm looking at you, Magic: The Gathering), but a simple tap of the screen on Pokemon TCG moves you past the animations and on to your next turn. The game does, unfortunately, have a tendency to crash. It seemed to get better as time went on, and while I never had a problem playing in an online match, the matches against the CPU seemed to crash as often as not.

The online PVP play is excellent. I played several matches and experienced no lag and no major issues. I won the overwhelming majority of my matches, which is a testament to three things: 1. My own dominance in all things game-related. 2. The game's easy-to-grasp nature. 3. The effectiveness of the Deck Builder tool.
Let me expand on the Deck Builder. You choose two Pokemon creature cards that you've unlocked, and the builder will construct a deck for you to use that features those two Pokemon. I created a water/psychic deck that pretty much destroyed everything and everyone I faced. Frankly, I did not expect that from such a tool. In my experience, those kinds of tools end up creating Frankenstein decks that just get steamrolled. Not so here. Fantastic tool. If you know more about Pokemon than I do, then I'm sure you can create your own deck just fine, but for a n00b, it's dead useful.
Pokemon Trading Card Game Online
The game and tool would be even better if there were a way to use the custom decks you create against the CPU in the league modes. The game only gives you three options in the league mode: a fire deck, a nature deck, or a water deck. Maybe the developers were concerned that using your own deck would unbalance the matches against the CPU, but it would be nice if you could use those custom decks in something other than online PVP or practice mode.
This last item is a little nit-picky, I know, but it would be nice if you could play the game offline somehow. I know it's called Pokemon TCG Online. I get that, but it's frustrating when I'm sitting in the waiting room at some doctor's office and I'm stuck playing FTL because my Pokemon game requires a WiFi connection that I don't have.

Pokemon TCG Online for the iPad was my first experience ever with the Pokemon Trading Card Game in any form. Randomized Booster Packs come with codes for 10 other random cards online (they won't be the same cards that you got in the physical pack). Finally, special Pokemon EX tins and boxes come with a powerful EX card, and an online code for that same card.
I've bought a few theme decks, EX tins, and boosters, and have enjoyed using them to play the real card game with my girlfriend and online against strangers. Using the online codes, I've been able to quickly build up a nice collection and put together some fairly strong custom decks. This game is a lot of fun, but be warned, it's also incredibly addicting!
